PH | A Taste of Hokkaido Ramen Santouka

Is it just me or are we also being invaded by ramen shops nowadays?  Don't get me wrong.  I'm all for variety and am actually quite happy to see that the Filipino palate is getting more exposed to other types of cuisine.  I guess globalization is really upon us.

But I digress.  Ramen's always been comfort food to me.  It's the warm soupy goodness; the generous savoury toppings and noodles.  When before I'd usually go to Ajisen Ramen (it's one of our fave ramen places in Singapore, too.  Read about that in this here post.) to have my ramen fix, nowadays I just try to look for the new players in any of the major malls for variety and a taste of something different.

And one of those new players here in the Metro is Hokkaido Ramen Santouka.

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka in Glorietta, Makati

We came in on a slightly rainy Saturday evening.  With the Husband feeling a slight cold coming on, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka's was just calling to us with some warm soup that we urgently needed that time.

We tried 2 of their bestsellers -- the Char Sui Ramen and the Santouka Chicken Ramen.

Char Siu Ramen

Char Siu Ramen (Php390 for a regular bowl) is basically ramen with roasted pork belly.  Pork has a thin layer of fat, just the way I like it. Totally enjoyed eating it along with the noodles.  The broth is good, albeit slightly salty for my taste.  I should have asked them to take it easy on the salt.

NOTE: Almost all of Hokkaido Ramen Santouka's ramens use the same broth -- a special blend using pork bones and other spices that make their soup more flavorful even without any extra unnecessary  garnishes.  The only difference is the type of seasoning used to add some saltiness to it.  This your server will ask you for once you place an order.

Santouka Chicken Ramen

Santouka Chicken Ramen (Php300) is more or less the same as the Char Siu Ramen except chicken is added (plus is used in the broth, too) instead of pork. I actually like this dish better because of its more delicate flavor.

Aside from the food, I do have to commend Hokkaido Ramen Santouka for the small touches to ensure that their little guests are also accommodated.  The Little One was actually give her own kid-appropriate utensils and bowl.

There's also a toy capsule vending machine in the corner (Php100 for a token; 1 is all you need) when you want to keep the kiddos occupied.

Pretty cool.  Can't wait to try their other ramens next time.  J
