Nando’s Chickenland in Singapore: Home of the Famous Extra Hot Peri-Peri-Marinated Fowl

Nando’s is a popular casual dining establishment originating from South Africa.  It’s been making waves here in Singapore since 2010, mainly because of their grilled chicken dishes marinated in their special extra hot peri-peri (literally means "pepper-pepper"; refers to the African Bird's Eye chilli, a type of chili pepper grown widely in Eastern and Southern Africa) marinade.  So it’s really no surprise that the Husband and I would be dining here on more than one occasion.

But what makes their chicken so darn special?

Nando's, Singapore

As mentioned, people come here for their flame-grilled chicken fix.  Nando’s boasts of having all their fowl pieces marinated in a special, ultra-top secret (is that you, KFC?) marinade for a whole 24 hours, thus ensuring the flavors seep right down to the bone.

They’re then grilled and basted with their signature Peri-Peri sauce, with patrons opting for the very mild Lemon & Herb type to the Extra Hot.

The Pero-o-meter

A usual order (S$10.90 / Php359.70* to S$18.90 / Php623.70* for a ¼ and ½ chicken, respectively) includes just their grilled fowl specialty.  But an additional S$3.90 (Php128.70*) turns it into a combo meal with your choice of 2 regular sides.

Our picks?  The oh-so-creamy coleslaw (below) and their slightly spicy potato wedges (pictured above).

Note that Mediterranean rice is also considered a side and not readily included in the meal as well.

To be honest, I never really liked the place.  I mean the food’s ok and the sides are pretty tasty; but it isn’t something I’d be writing home about.  And given a choice, it isn’t a place I’d be dying to come back to time and time again.  The Husband, though, is a huge fan and simply enjoys their grilled offerings.

If it wasn’t for a article, I would never have guessed just how popular this place was and that there is a clamor for it to reach our shores soon.  Well, to each his own, I guess.  J

  1. There's this Peri-Peri resto here in Manila, but I haven't tried it yet. Mapuntahan nga..

    1. I think there's one in Megamall, if I'm not mistaken; but it's not Nando's. It's a different brand. Name escapes me now but we did try it out once. Their chicken wasn't as spicy but it was good (I liked it better nga than Nando's. Hehehe!)

Their pasta dishes were also tasty. =)

  2. Is it that popular? I never know about Nando's if Ihaven't your post about it. Will it be popular like Bon Chon if it hits the Philippines? Let's wait and see.

    1. It's fairly popular in SG. Always full during lunch and dinner times. But I don't think they'll be as popular as BonChon here. Unless they change the flavor to meet the Filipino taste. =)
