Reflections at Bukit Chandu, Singapore

Singapore, similar to the Philippines, was also invaded by the Imperial Japanese forces during World War II.  And like our nation, honors its fallen heroes and memories through museums, statues, and other commemorative structures.

One of those that serve as a reminder here of its painful past is Reflections at Bukit Chandu.

Reflections at Bukit Chandu, Singapore
Connected to Kent Ridge Park by a rustic canopy walk (at tree-top level), the end of which one is met with the sight of an impressive, old black and white colonial bungalow, one of the last remaining homes of this style in the Lion City.

Originally used to house senior British officers at the turn of the 20th century, Reflections at Bukit Chandu has been restored and now is used as a WWII interpretive center.

Mural depicting the battle at Bukit Chandu

Gallant statues of soldiers welcome visitors to the site; garbed in military uniforms and artillery, posed ready for battle.

Inside one can see various photographs, maps, and artifacts covering the history of WWII in Malaya.  Documentaries and other witness accounts from survivors make visitors feel the pain of this dark period.

One of the most vivid portions of the exhibit is this area depicting the story of a British prisoner of war..

The center's interactive and remarkable displays truly makes history come alive.

We are indeed a lucky generation, having experienced no major wars (so far).  But it should not be our excuse for not knowing this dark history, if only to prevent events like this from happening again.
