Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why

I'm not really in the habit of purchasing Young Adult fiction novels, mainly because most of the themes involved are not to my liking.  I am still in awe at how much sex and violence are infused in a teen book nowadays, such a far cry from the novels of my generation (i.e Sweet Valley series, Sweet Dreams, etc.)  Guess I have yet to recover from the shock.  Hehehe!

But for this book, I am more than willing to make an exception.

Jay Asher's first novel deals with teen bullying, depression and suicide -- common predicaments plaguing most adolescents.  Thirteen Reasons Why tells the story of Hannah Baker, a high school student who commits suicide.  Before taking her own life, she sends a series of tapes to 13 people who has directly or indirectly had a hand in her final decision.

The book is written in the point of view of Clay Jenson, one of Hannah's baker's dozen, who listens intently and reflects deeply on the information he has been given.  Read the full summary here at Amazon.com.

This book has definitely struck a chord in me.  Oftentimes we act in thoughtless ways wherein we disregard the feelings and emotions of others.  Heaven knows I've been guilty and have also been a victim of it one too many times.

This novel is a story about the cruelty of people and how much even our small thoughtless actions can lead to dire consequences.  It makes you think and be more conscious of youself and your everyday interactions.

Definitely a keeper and one I will give to my daughter to read in the future.  I give this novel 5 out of 5 stars.  =)
